Baker County ‘s diverse geography provides a wide variety of habitat for native and migrating wildlife and the scenic vistas and views along the County’s three scenic byways provide an incredible backdrop for birding and watchable wildlife adventures.

A few of our favorite birding hot spots include:

• The Sumpter Dredge Wildlife area between McEwen Station and the Sumpter Dredge State Park
• The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway
• The Elkhorn Wildlife Area
• The Burnt River Canyon between the towns of Durkee and Unity

In addition to the more than 200 bird species that visitors can see in Baker County throughout the year, deer, elk and big horn sheep are also common sights depending on time of year. In the winter months visitors can enjoy a one of a kind wildlife experience by taking a horse-drawn wagon elk feeding tour.
